Variable rate planting prescriptions
It’s time to publish your Farm of the Future report. I am Tim Hammerich.
Yesterday we shared how Indiana farmer Jake Smoker improved his nitrogen management with the help of his agronomist and the Granular Agronomy platform. Today, its agronomist, Cassie Misch, adds how they’re taking a similar approach to variable-rate planting prescriptions.
Misch… “One of the things we do with the granular agronomy platform is to provide a prescription for each hybrid on each field. So let’s say Jake plants 10 corn hybrids on his farm, he would have a prescription for everyone on each field. So let’s say we have a plan for what to plant and the plan changes. He already has a prescription for it without having to wait between fields and say “oh, I forgot I’m changing the hybrid over there”. I need a new prescription.
Farmer Jake Smoker said having these prescriptions on hand is a lifesaver.
Smoker… “I roll in the field. Everyone is crazy. It’s the middle of the plantation and it’s only rained for seven days, so it’s just time to go. And you go, what strain did I load? We’re going to shoot on this field which is not dry, but I have this one. Hey, it’ll be okay on this pitch, but I didn’t intend to. Go call on the monitor. Here is the script for it. Far you ride. Having all these scripts already preloaded is a lifesaver for me.
It’s an example of how the right technology in the right hands can really improve an operation.
