The Department of Information Technology (IT) of Tamil Nadu has been officially renamed Department of Information Technology and Digital Services. The government has issued an official GO in this regard. An announcement regarding the proposed name change was made earlier on the floor of the Assembly during the 2022-2023 budget session.

The IT Department was created in October 1998 with the aim of supporting the growth of the IT industry in the State as well as ensuring the development of e-Governance.

According to the order issued by Neeraj Mittal, principal secretary of the Department of Information Technology and Digital Services, this department handled all matters relating to information technology, electronics and communications.

The development of the computer services and information technology sectors was correlated. Therefore, in order to achieve integrated development, a proactive integrated policy approach was needed.

To bolster the growth of emerging technologies and digital technology services, the department’s name was changed, Mr. Mittal said.
