I am Bob Larson. Technology in agriculture is growing every day and SmartVisionWorks is taking a big place at the table bringing customers artificial intelligence for food sorting.

Curtis Koelling, vice president of product development and innovation at SmartVisionWorks, says they’ve been with the company for about ten years, started with three Ph.D.…

KOELLING… “We actually started out as a consulting company doing AI and vision type work for food companies. And, we decided we were tired of doing it and wanted to sell our own products. So we kind of left the consulting market about four years ago and started selling our own products. And, it seemed like the potato industry was a good place to start. »

But that doesn’t mean, Koelling said potatoes were going to be easy…

KOELLING… “If you’re thinking about a potato, and it’s a sticky situation, because you have a dirty colored product that’s covered in dirt in a dirty factory, laugh.”

VisionWorks, says Koelling, is different from others that rely on color vision…

KOELLING… “AI is a tool that we think is really capable of looking at organic elements where there’s a lot of variation and color just isn’t enough. And so we’re able to apply our AI vision technology to places like the potato and really knock it out of the park. »
