Merck SenseHub Pt 1 Feedlot

Merck SenseHub Pt 1 Feedlot

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Recently, we told you about livestock producers who turned to technology to get their herds humming with a precision tool from Merck Animal Health called Whisper on Arrival.

And now Merck veterinarian Justin Welsh says there’s a second option for detecting the disease in your livestock…

WELSH… “The other one is, which we have now, is called SenseHub Feedlot and it’s a tag on the animal, if you will, a device that fits in their ear and does a very similar thing. It is not necessarily a diagnosis of respiratory disease. It’s a diagnosis of something wrong.

But, Welsh says respiratory illnesses are the most common…

WELSH… “90% of illness diagnoses in a feedlot are respiratory illnesses, so kind of by default, they catch respiratory illnesses very early. But it also detects other anomalous things that we find and it just keeps piling up. I mean, as we get machine learning and all that, the more data we get, the more we learn about how these animals are acting in the enclosure and what changes are showing us that they need help.

And with the challenge of finding enough workers…

WELSH…” The obvious labor advantage is there, isn’t it, and what we find with that is that it reduces the need for a pen rider to go in each individual enclosure approximately 50% or 60% of his time.”

Tune in tomorrow to learn more about Merck’s SenseHub Feedlot system for healthier livestock.
