Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022 – 24


The United Nations (UN) World Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is observed annually around the world to highlight the importance of Media and Information Week . The week provides a platform for stakeholders to review and celebrate progress made towards Media and Information Literacy for All.

  • October 24-31, 2022 marks the celebration of the 11th Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week.
  • Global MIL Week 2022 is hosted by Nigeria.

The theme of Global MIL Week 2022 is “Nurturing Trust – A Media and Information Literacy Imperative”.

  • Global MIL Week 2022 focuses on trust and solidarity in relation to people, media, digital platforms, governments, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.

Objectives of Global MIL Week:

  • Increase awareness of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) globally;
  • Promote diversity, pluralism, intercultural dialogue and equality;
  • Promote international cooperation on MIL;
  • Create constructive spaces for knowledge sharing, research and debate;
  • Launch new projects.


I.In 2011, the first International Forum on Media and Information Literacy was held

with the Fez Declaration on MIL and dedicated a week as Global Media and Information Literacy Week which will be celebrated from June 15-21 every year.

ii.Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week was launched in 2012 and led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in cooperation with the Alliance for Media and Information Literacy, UNESCO-UNAOC (United Nations Alliance of Civilizations). and the University Network for Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID), and others.

iii.In 2019, the UNESCO General Conference Proclamation decided to proclaim World MIL Week to be observed from October 24-31 each year.

iv.March 25 2021The General Assembly of the United Nations(UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/75/267 and proclaimed October 24 to 31 each year as part of World Media and Information Literacy Week.


The Global MIL Week 2022 celebration includes the 12th Conference on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue and the Seventh Youth Agenda Forum.

The Youth Forum is taking place from 24-31 October 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria and online.

The forum is themed “Media and information literate young people engaging in building trust and solidarity”.

4th World MIL Youth Hackathon:

The Global Media and Information Literacy Youth Hackathon is an opportunity for young people and youth organizations around the world to participate in creating innovative MIL learning in meaningful ways.

The 4th Global MIL Youth Hackathon will take place during Global MIL Week 2022.

UNESCO MIL Alliance:

The UNESCO MIL Alliance, formerly known as the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), aims to promote international cooperation to ensure that everyone has access to skills in media and information.

MIL Global Awards:

The Global MIL Awards recognize information/library, media and technology specialists, educators, artists, activists, researchers, policy makers, NGOs, associations and other groups integrating MIL from innovative way in their work and related activities.

  • The award recognizes excellence in 6 sectors: education, research, policy, advocacy, media and communication, and information sectors.
  • GAPMIL awarded the 1st edition of the International Media and Information Literacy Awards (Global MIL Awards) in 2015.
  • The prize is supported by UNESCO and UNAOC.
