DATA CENTER MANAGER

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:

Plan, implement and maintain a continuous and efficient data center service, to support the operations of the Department of Information Technology Services.

The Data Center Manager is responsible for the execution, maintenance and improvement of all or part of the processes (related to ITIL) applicable to the management of the data centers concerned in accordance with the RACI matrix.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include, but not be limited to,

  • Data center management:
    • Manage environmental infrastructure (power distribution, grounding, lightning protection for data center(s), UPS and HVAC);
    • Plan, forecast and schedule work and provide leadership with respect to the operation of the data center;
    • Monitor and manage performance within the Data Center, and organize work and personnel within the Data Center;
    • Ensure backup system and procedures are adhered to, manage all tasks associated with maintenance and upgrades, and ensure necessary maintenance and call recording is performed on equipment;

  • Physical infrastructure environments:
    • Assess whether the necessary environmental infrastructures are in place and functional, and whether the necessary corrective measures are taken in the event of breakdowns and/or problems;
    • Ensure that infrastructure installations are made according to the STI specification document;
    • Manage the maintenance of the physical infrastructure of data centers, server rooms, as well as network rooms on all UP campuses;
    • Perform regular site inspections on all campuses;

  • UPS:
    • Ensure that preventive maintenance measures are in place and manage the maintenance contract for large inverters;
    • Supervise the entry of all in the inventory list and monitoring system, if applicable;
    • Monitor inverters and batteries through the management system;
    • Manage the supply of inverters and batteries as needed within the budget, as well as maintenance and repairs on small inverters, in the most cost-effective manner;

  • Optical mark reading:
    • Supervise and manage the optical mark reading system with respect to the prerequisites of the parameters on the grading of tests, examinations and student feedback on tuition;
    • Manage quality control with respect to the accuracy of scored tests, examinations and student feedback;
    • Liaise with relevant stakeholders;
    • Ensure that sufficient stock of media is available at adequate levels to meet user needs;

  • Access control:
    • Apply and ensure that appropriate access control is in place and adhered to in data centers and network rooms;
    • Oversee new access control installations as needed;

  • Projects:
    • Ensure involvement with the various teams in the planning phases of the environmental infrastructure of data centers and rooms;
    • Advise subordinates and users regarding UPS requirements, and provide advice and guidance to ensure necessary quality measures are in place with installations;

  • ITS fleet vehicles:
    • Manage the division’s operations fleet of vehicles with respect to reservations and cancellations;
    • Ensure and coordinate that the entire ITS fleet is scheduled for its washing and inspection routine on a monthly basis, and ensure that the fleet receives its annual maintenance services as required;
    • Advise management on issues, maintenance and use by staff and student contractors;

  • General Administration:
    • Financial direction:
      • Financial control, budget forecasts and expenditures within the allocated budget framework;

    • Resource management:
      • Develop and manage staff, as well as the performance appraisal process with staff;

    • Management of suppliers:
      • Relationship management and management of quotes, purchase orders and invoices;

    • Asset Management:
      • Implement the asset verification process quarterly;

    • Compile and provide monthly reports to management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • National degree related to computer science (e.g. National Diploma in Computer Science, National Diploma in Information Technology); with
  • A total of six years of experience, including:
    • Solid experience in data center operations and workflow;
    • Data center infrastructure and network room requirements;
    • Work in project teams;
    • Server infrastructure technologies;
    • storage infrastructure technologies;
    • Data center security technologies and security systems;
    • Backup infrastructure technologies;
    • Budgeting process;

WHERE

  • An applicable three-year bachelor’s degree or B Tech (B.Sc., B. Com Informatics), with
  • A total of four years of experience, including:
    • Solid experience in data center operations and workflow;
    • Data center infrastructure and network room requirements;
    • Work in project teams;
    • Server infrastructure technologies;
    • storage infrastructure technologies;
    • Data center security technologies and security systems;
    • Backup infrastructure technologies;
    • Budgeting process.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIORAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of:
    • Analyze needs and prepare the resulting reports;
    • HVAC;
    • Modify control procedures;
    • Uninterrupted power supply systems and general understanding of electricity;
    • Business Services, Service Level Agreement Management, Availability Management and Capacity Management Principles;

  • Good planning skills (project planning and execution);
  • Technical skills :
  • Behavioral skills:
    • Ability to work independently, on own initiative and as a member of a team;
    • Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and conflict management skills;
    • Demonstrate strong organizational, prioritization and administrative skills;
    • Negotiation techniques;
    • Skills for problem solving.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS AND PREFERENCES:

  • Additional technical qualifications, general knowledge in the following areas:
    • Design principles and operational methods of modern data centers (HVAC power and layouts);
    • ITIL Practitioner certification, preferably in the field of availability and capacity management;
    • Advanced technical and/or commercial training;

  • Five years of experience in:
    • Experience in IT operations group and IT customer support;
    • Best business practices and techniques relevant to data center management and environmental monitoring;
    • Knowledge of risk assessment;
    • Project management.

The annual compensation package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s appointment level, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid plans and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
