Apple waste for packaging Pt 1

Apple waste for packaging Pt 1

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. A new study by researchers at Oregon State University is working on ways to turn waste apples and other fruits into eco-friendly packaging materials to replace plastic.

Professor Yanyun Zhao says that using fruit waste from processing would be another great option or solution…

ZHAO… “So we are facing this plastic packaging crisis because we know the potential damage to the environment and our ecosystems with these plastic packaging or even other types. That is why I mentioned in my lab that we are really trying to find solutions.”

And to that end, Zhao says fruit waste offers some great benefits…

ZHAO … “When you use bioproducts to develop compostable packaging, you help solve two problems. We are developing more environmentally friendly packaging to improve stability. Another thing is the conversion, we call the reuse of bioproducts to develop compostable packaging. »

Food waste, Zhao says, can help replace another recyclable product…

ZHAO… “When you look at molded pulp packaging, most of it is made from recycled newspaper. And with electronic technology, the quantity of recyclable newspapers or the supply of recyclable newspapers has decreased.

Tune in tomorrow to learn more about OSU’s research to turn fruit waste into packaging materials.
